Urban Regeneration
Target: to show the process of transformation that is being carried out in the former municipal developments of San Francisco Javier and Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, applying integral sustainability criteria, both in planning and in the building, mobility and treatment of public spaces.
Conclusions: The City Council of Madrid is carrying out a model of sustainable urban development that incorporates the most advanced technologies to increase energy efficiency and environmental quality; it is being configured as a benchmark to follow in urban renewal operations.
The municipal residential developments of San Francis Javier and Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles were built in the 1950's, characterised from the beginning by inadequate planning, a lack of infrastructures and the poor quality of construction materials. It was therefore necessary to carry out a comprehensive renewal of the area.
The City Council took on the restoration of the area in three different phases: the relocation of residents, planning and the development of the new district in accordance with quality and sustainability criteria and the construction of new buildings and collective utilities.
